Plantation Shutters in Salford: What They Cost and Which Rooms Suit Them

“Shutters or blinds?” is one of the most common questions we get asked on a Salford home visit, and it usually comes up in the same rooms — a front bay in Pendleton or Weaste, a bathroom that needs something waterproof, or a living room where the owner wants a look that doesn’t scream “rental.” Plantation shutters solve a specific set of problems that blinds don’t, but they’re not always the right call either. Here’s how to work out which is which.

What Plantation Shutters Actually Are

Plantation shutters are solid hinged panels — usually made from a moisture-resistant composite, PVC, or hardwood — fitted permanently into a frame around the window. Wide adjustable louvres let you control light and privacy without opening the panel at all, which is the main thing that separates them from a blind: shutters become part of the window itself rather than sitting in front of it.

That permanence is exactly why they suit some Salford properties so well and others less so. In a period terrace with a bay window you’re keeping long-term, shutters add value and look right against the age of the house. In a rented flat or a house you might move from in a couple of years, that permanence is a downside — you can’t take them with you, and a landlord may not permit the fixing work at all.

What They Cost

Plantation shutter pricing depends mainly on three things: the material (PVC and composite are cheapest, hardwood costs more), the frame style, and how many individual panels a window needs — a bay with three angled panes will cost more than a single flat window of the same total width. As a rough guide, expect a straightforward single window to start from a few hundred pounds, rising for bays, larger windows, or hardwood finishes. We give an exact fixed price on the home visit once we’ve measured and discussed material, because two windows of the same size can price very differently depending on what’s fitted.

Which Rooms Actually Suit Shutters

Bay windows. This is where shutters earn their reputation. A period Salford bay — square or canted — takes shutters well because each pane gets its own frame and panel set, so the fit follows the angle of the bay exactly rather than trying to fake it with a single flat blind.

Bathrooms. PVC and composite shutters are fully moisture-resistant, which makes them one of the few window treatments that genuinely suits a bathroom long-term without warping, discolouring, or needing regular replacement the way some fabric blinds do in a humid room.

Front-facing living rooms. For the same street-facing privacy reasons covered in our piece on Salford’s Victorian terraces, shutters give you full control over what’s visible from the pavement without losing all the daylight — tilt the louvres rather than drawing a blind fully.

Where shutters make less sense: rear extension windows and bi-fold doors that need to stay easy to access day to day, rented properties where you won’t get permission for permanent fixing, and any room where you’re likely to change the look again in the next couple of years — that’s blind territory, not shutter territory.

Motorised Shutters

Motorisation is worth asking about specifically for hard-to-reach windows — tall front bays, stairwell windows, or anything above a fitted unit where you’d otherwise be stretching to adjust the louvres by hand. It adds to the cost but removes that problem entirely, and it can be added to most of our shutter ranges at the quote stage.

How Installation Works

We measure every panel individually on the home visit — not just the overall window opening, but each pane if it’s a bay — because shutters are a permanent fixture and a poor initial measurement is far more visible than it would be on an off-the-peg blind. Once the frame style and material are agreed, shutters are manufactured to that exact measurement and fitted by our own team, not a subcontractor. Most single windows take under a day to fit; bays and multi-window rooms may need slightly longer.

FAQ

It depends on material, frame style, and how many panels the window needs — a bay costs more than a single flat window of the same width. We give a fixed price on the home visit once we’ve measured and discussed material options.

Yes — PVC and composite shutters are fully moisture-resistant and hold up well in bathrooms long-term, unlike some fabric blinds which can warp or discolour in a humid room.

Yes, for windows that are hard to reach — tall bays, stairwell windows, or anything above a fitted unit. It’s worth mentioning at the quote stage if this applies to your window.

Blinds, generally. Shutters are a permanent fixture fitted into the frame, which usually isn’t appropriate — or permitted — in a rented home. Perfect Fit blinds are the better rental option since they clip in without drilling.
